Donald Francis Tovey (1875–1940) has long been known as one of the finest writers on music in English – but he saw himself primarily as a composer. His Symphony, Op. 32, and Cello Concerto, Op. 40, already released in this Toccata Classics survey of Tovey’s music, alerted modern listeners to a major voice in British orchestral music. These two trios, lyrical and intense, from the start of Tovey’s career, present him in his first love: chamber music.

Reviews

Having already given us useful modern recordings of Donald Francis Tovey’s Symphony in D and vast Cello Concerto (see above), Toccata Classics now presents this first volume in a series devoted to his chamber music. Both works were composed in 1895, during Tovey’s first full calendar year at Balliol College, Oxford.

Inscribed to Parry ‘as the first work of a grateful pupil’, Tovey’s Op 1 is as sizeable as it is thoughtful – a patiently argued creation of remarkable fluency, organisational skill and imagination for one so young. The influence of Brahms dominates, and the German master’s kindly presence can also be felt in Op 8 in C minor, which was originally conceived for clarinet, horn and piano. The version performed here was eventually published by Schott in 1912, by which time the trio had also acquired the title Style tragique. At its heart is a particularly appealing Largo in A flat (thus following the key scheme of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and Pathétique Sonata), which leads without a break into the confidently striding finale.

The London Piano Trio audibly believe in every note, and their dedicated performances are set within a bold sound frame that’s somewhat tiring on the ear. The presentation is copiously detailed, as ever from this source. Inquisitive collectors can safely investigate.

Gramophone 2010

This issue is highly recommended and augurs well for further releases in this series, which I look forward to hearing with eager anticipation.
